Implementing RFID does not always demand expensive new infrastructure. In fact, RFID can be an add-on technology that delivers incremental value from existing investments.
Inco, Ltd., has installed Wi-Fi active RFID as the first phase of an equipment-tracking project. Inside an underground mine in Sudbury, Ontario, Inco’s pilot project leverages a wireless data network for location-based services by using the mine’s existing wireless infrastructure. The pilot is evaluating how well Wi-Fi active RFID tags can track items.
“Mining is a perfect example of an industry with a strong need for real-time location that has not been realized until the advent of Wi-Fi based active RFID technology,” says Gabi Daniely, AeroScout marketing vice president.
